A Refrigerator That Won't Cool

What "not cooling" actually tells us
Cooling problems come in different flavors, and the flavor matters to us. Freezer cold but fridge warm usually points to airflow, since the air is chilled in the freezer and blown over into the fridge. Block that fan or that path and one side suffers. Both sides warm with the unit humming points toward the sealed system or the compressor circuit. Both sides warm and dead silent points toward power or controls. So before you call, notice which one you have, and notice the sounds too: clicking every few minutes, a fan that revs and stops, or nothing at all. Start with the cheap stuff: airflow and frost
The least expensive causes are usually blocked air. Vents inside the fridge get buried under grocery bags, casserole dishes, a stack of takeout boxes. Air can't circulate, so the top shelf freezes and the bottom goes warm. Condenser coils under or behind the unit collect dust, pet hair, and lint, and a coated coil can't shed heat, so the fridge runs and runs without getting cold. Door gaskets are another one. A torn or gummy seal lets humid air pour in all day, and around here that means frost buildup and a compressor that never gets a break. All three are inexpensive to correct.
Defrost, fans, and controls
Next tier up is parts that wear out. Every frost-free fridge has a defrost system that melts frost off the evaporator coil on a schedule. When it fails, ice slowly encases that coil until air can't get through. The classic sign is a freezer that still works while the fridge climbs, and a fan that sounds like it's hitting something. Evaporator and condenser fan motors fail on their own too. Bearings dry out, blades crack. Thermistors and control boards can misread temperature and just stop calling for cooling. Lightning surges are hard on boards, and we see plenty of that in North Florida storm season.
The sealed system and compressor
The costly family is the sealed refrigeration system: compressor, refrigerant, condenser, evaporator, and the tubing that joins them. A refrigerant leak or a compressor that won't start means the fridge can't make cold at all, no matter how clean the coils are. Signs include a unit that hums then clicks off, warm air blowing off the back, or a compressor too hot to touch. Salt air near the coast will corrode outdoor-adjacent components and tubing over the years. Sealed-system work takes recovery equipment and licensing, so it's never a homeowner job. Safe checks you can do, and where to stop
Do these first. Confirm the outlet has power by plugging in a lamp. Check the breaker. Make sure the temperature dial wasn't bumped, especially if kids or guests have been in the kitchen. Pull food away from the rear vents inside. Close the door on a dollar bill and tug; if it slides right out, the gasket is weak. Vacuum dust off any coils you can reach without removing panels. Listen for a fan with the door closed. Stop there. Don't pull back panels, don't touch wiring, and don't go at the ice with a pick. How long should I wait before calling?
If the fridge hasn't recovered after a few hours with the vents clear and the door shut, call. Food above 40 degrees for more than two hours becomes a safety issue, so don't wait days hoping it resets itself.
Can I unplug it overnight to fix the ice?
Unplugging for 24 hours can melt a frosted coil and get cooling back for a while. That confirms a defrost problem, but it doesn't repair it. The ice comes back, usually within a week or two.
Is it worth repairing an older refrigerator?
Depends on the failure. Fans, gaskets, thermistors, and defrost parts are routine repairs on most units. A failed compressor in a very old fridge is a different conversation, and we'll walk you through it.
