When the Ice Maker Goes Quiet

What an empty ice bin is actually telling you
An ice maker needs water coming in, cold air around the mold, and a working signal to cycle. When ice stops, one of those broke down. If the freezer is still holding food cold, your sealed system is probably fine, which points at the water supply or the ice maker. Pay attention to the clues. Hollow or half-formed cubes suggest slow water, and a bone-dry mold with no cubes at all suggests no water arriving. Cubes frozen into a solid block usually means slow use plus a warm spot. Each of those sends us down a different path.
Cause family one: the water isn't getting there
This is the most common one, and the cheapest to fix. The shutoff valve behind or under the fridge may have been bumped closed during a floor cleaning or a move. The supply line can kink when the fridge gets pushed back to the wall. Around here, mineral-heavy well water and city water both leave scale behind, and a clogged water filter chokes flow down to a trickle. Filters need changing on a schedule, not when you happen to remember. If the dispenser also runs weak or spits air, water supply is very likely your problem.
Cause family two: it's not cold enough at the mold
An ice maker won't cycle until the mold hits a low temperature. Set your freezer around zero degrees. Running warmer than that, it makes ice slowly or not at all. Then look at what's blocking airflow. Bags of shrimp stacked against the back vent, an overpacked door shelf, or frost building over the vent will all cut circulation. Door gaskets matter too. Humid Gulf air pouring past a torn seal loads the freezer up with moisture and frost. Make sure the door closes all the way and nothing on a shelf is holding it open a crack.
Cause family three: the ice maker or its controls quit
Sometimes water and cold are both fine and the unit itself is done. The fill valve solenoid can fail after a lightning surge, and we see plenty of those in summer. Thermostats, optical sensors, and the small motor inside the module wear out. The bail arm or shutoff paddle may be stuck in the off position, which the machine reads as a full bin. Control boards fail too, usually after storms or a long power interruption. Those are parts replacements rather than adjustments, and they need testing before anybody swaps anything.
Safe checks you can do right now, and where to stop
Start here. Confirm the ice maker switch is on. Lift the bail arm if your model has one. Empty the bin and break up any bridged ice. Check that the water shutoff valve is fully open, and feel behind the fridge for a kinked line. Note how old your filter is and replace it if it's due. Set the freezer to zero and give it a full day. Then stop. Don't pull the ice maker or any panels, don't thaw with a knife, and stay away from wiring. If the bin is still empty, call us and tell us what you found. That narrows the diagnosis fast. We test water pressure at the valve, check the mold temperature, and read the electrical side with meters before we replace a part.

Why did my ice maker stop right after a thunderstorm?
A surge can take out the fill valve solenoid or the control board and leave the rest of the fridge working. That pattern is common here. We test to find which component took the hit before anything gets replaced.
How long should I wait after changing the water filter?
Give it a full 24 hours. Most ice makers need several cycles to refill and freeze. Throw out the first batch or two, since a new filter releases air and carbon dust that make cloudy cubes.
My ice smells like the freezer. Is that a repair issue?
Usually not. Old ice picks up odors, especially when the bin sits unused through snowbird season. Dump it, wash the bin with mild soap, dry it, and let fresh ice build up. If the smell hangs on, you may be due for a filter change.
