Electric Cooktop Element Not Heating
A cold burner on an electric cooktop usually comes down to a bad element, a burned receptacle, a worn switch, or a tripped leg of power. You turn the knob and nothing happens, while the other burners heat fine. Or the whole surface is dead and dinner is on hold. Here is how we trace it, and what you can check yourself before we come out.

What a cold element is actually telling you
Heat on an electric cooktop needs power coming in, a switch telling the element to turn on, and an element that can still carry current. When one burner is dead and the rest work, the fault is almost always at that burner. When every burner is dead but the clock and lights still work, we look at the power feed, since most ranges run on two legs of 240 volts and can lose one. A burner that glows dim or heats slowly is a different clue. That usually means a control cycling wrong instead of a broken element.
Cause family one: the connection at the element
On coil-top ranges the burner plugs into a receptacle under the drip pan. Boil-overs, humidity, and salt air near the coast eat at those terminals. A loose or burned plug makes a poor connection, so the burner goes cold or only heats when you wiggle it. That is the cheapest fault to fix and one we run into constantly in older Florida kitchens. Other times the coil has an open break inside the sheath. Looks perfectly fine, passes no current. Either part is inexpensive next to the rest of the appliance.
Cause family two: switches, controls, and boards
Behind each knob sits an infinite switch that cycles power on and off to set your heat level. The contacts inside pit and burn after years of use. When one fails you get no heat at all, heat stuck on full, or heat that comes and goes. Glass smoothtops with touch controls are a different animal. A control board or a ribbon connector may be at fault, and lightning surges during summer storms cause plenty of that here. If several burners quit at once right after a storm, we look at the board first.
What you can safely check yourself
Unplug the range or shut off its breaker before you touch anything. On a coil top, lift the burner out, look at the metal prongs for black scorching or melted plastic down in the socket, then reseat it firmly. Check the drip pan for standing spill. Then go look at your breaker panel. A 240-volt range uses a double breaker, and one half can trip while the other holds, which kills the burners but leaves the clock lit. Push it fully off, then back on. Stop there. Do not pull the cooktop surface, the back panel, or any wiring covers.

We meter the element for resistance to confirm whether the coil is open. We read voltage at the receptacle with the panel safely opened and proper test gear, so we know whether the switch is actually delivering power. We look over wire harnesses for heat damage where they pass near the burner boxes. On smoothtops we test the terminals at each surface element and pull control board error codes. Then we match the part to your exact model number, since element wattage and terminal style vary. Can I use my cooktop with one dead burner?
Usually yes, as long as there is no burning smell, no arcing, and no scorched socket. If you saw sparks or smelled hot plastic, shut the breaker off and quit using the range until somebody checks it.
Why did several burners quit after a thunderstorm?
A surge can damage the control board or trip one leg of the 240-volt supply. Check the double breaker first. If it holds and the burners stay cold, the board probably took the hit.
Is a broken element worth repairing?
Often it is. Elements and receptacles are common parts and the job is straightforward. We look over the rest of the cooktop while we are there, so you know its real condition before you decide anything.
