A Burner That Clicks But Never Lights
A gas burner that clicks but won't light usually comes down to a clogged burner port, a damp or bad igniter, a knob switch, or the gas supply itself. Two of those you can check in a few minutes at the counter. You turn the knob, you hear the click-click-click, maybe you catch a whiff of gas, and nothing lights. Or one burner works fine and the one you actually use stays dead while dinner sits thawed on the counter.

What a dead burner is actually telling you
A gas burner needs gas at the burner head, a clear path for that gas to spread around the ring, and a spark, all at the same moment. Take one away and you get nothing. So listen and look before you do anything else. Clicking with no flame usually means the spark is fine and gas or airflow is the problem. Flame on one side only means the ports are blocked. No clicking at all points at the igniter, the switch under the knob, or power to the range. One minute of paying attention narrows this down a lot.
Cause one: clogged ports and a soaked igniter
This is the cheapest and most common one. Boil-overs happen, and sugar, grease, and pasta water dry into the tiny holes around the burner ring so gas can't get out evenly. Here on the coast, humidity and salt air make that crust worse and can leave the ceramic spark electrode damp or corroded. A wet igniter will click and click without throwing a real spark. Same story after you mop the cooktop, or after a long stretch away, which snowbirds run into every fall. Cleaning and drying the parts settles a good share of no-light calls without any parts at all.
Cause two: spark and switch problems
Each burner has its own igniter, and the knob has a switch that tells the spark module to fire. If one burner clicks and the others don't, suspect that burner's switch or igniter. If nothing clicks anywhere, the spark module or its power may be out. Florida lightning matters here. A nearby strike or a surge during a summer storm can kill the electronic module on a range that worked fine at breakfast. These are inside-the-appliance repairs. Don't pull panels. There's line voltage in there sitting next to a gas manifold, and that combination deserves a technician.
Cause three: gas supply and the valve itself
If several burners are weak or dead and the oven acts strange too, look at supply. A shut-off valve behind the range gets nudged easier than people think. A propane tank can run low. If you just moved the range to clean behind it, the flex line may be kinked. Past that, the burner valve or the safety valve inside the range can stick or fail, and that's technician territory. Never take a wrench to a gas line yourself. If you smell gas and it doesn't clear fast, stop, get everyone out, and call your gas provider first. Then call us.
Safe checks you can do, and what we do differently
Safe for you: check that the range has power, wipe the cooktop dry, and once everything is cool, lift off the grate and burner cap and clear the port holes with a straightened paperclip or a stiff brush. Not a toothpick, those snap off in the hole. Let it all dry fully before you try again. You can also swap a cap from a working burner to compare. On our end, we test the spark module and each knob switch, check gas pressure at the appliance, verify the safety valve opens, and look over the wiring for surge damage. Can I light the burner with a match until it's fixed?
Many gas cooktops can be match-lit, and your owner's manual will tell you. Light the match first, then turn the knob. If gas hisses and doesn't light quickly, shut the knob off and let the air clear before you try again.
Why does one burner click while the others light fine?
That points at parts specific to that burner: a clogged port ring, a damp or cracked igniter, or the switch under that knob. Cleaning and drying is worth trying first. If it still won't light, the part needs testing.
Could a thunderstorm really kill my stove's igniter?
Yes. Electronic spark modules and control boards are surge-sensitive. After a storm the burners may click nonstop, or not at all. If your range quit right after a strike nearby, tell us that when you call. It saves diagnostic time.
