Smell Gas Near the Stove? Do These Things, in This Order
If your kitchen smells like rotten eggs, get everyone out of the house and call your gas utility's emergency line from outside. Don't stay in there troubleshooting. Maybe the odor is faint, maybe it hits you the second you walk in, and either way the stove is a fair suspect. Gas smells are one of the few appliance problems where the right move is to stop looking and start moving. Here's the order we give homeowners.

Do These Things First, In This Order
1. Don't touch any switch. Not lights, not the range hood, not your garage door. 2. Open windows and exterior doors if you can do it on your way out. 3. Get everyone outside, pets too. Walk out the door you came in. 4. From outside, away from the house, call your gas utility's emergency line. That number is on your gas bill and on their website. 5. Stay out until they clear the home. If the smell is strong, forget the windows and just leave. A strong odor means gas has already built up, and you don't want to be standing in it. Nobody is going to think you overreacted. Utilities run these calls all day long, at no charge to you in most areas.
What Not To Do
Don't light a match to "check" a burner. Don't turn the oven on to see if it ignites. Leave the exhaust fan off, and don't plug or unplug anything. No lighters, candles, or grill starters anywhere near the kitchen. Make your phone calls from outside. Cell phones and cordless handsets are low risk, but there's no reason to take any risk at all when your driveway is twenty feet away. Also, don't try to shut the gas valve behind the range. That means reaching into a tight space right next to a possible leak. Valves belong to the utility or a licensed gas plumber.
When To Leave And When To Cut Anything Off
Leave immediately if the smell is strong, if you hear a hiss or whistle near the stove, if anyone feels dizzy or nauseated or gets a headache, or if the odor is spreading past the kitchen. If you have an outside main gas shutoff and you can reach it safely on your way out, go ahead and turn it off. Only if it's outdoors and you already know exactly where it is. Don't go hunting for it. Leave the electrical panel alone. Opening a panel or throwing breakers isn't a homeowner job during a suspected leak, and the arc off a breaker is the very thing you're trying to avoid.
Smells That Aren't Gas
Not every kitchen odor is a leak. A brand-new gas range often smells sharp the first few times you use it while factory oils burn off. Spilled food scorching under a burner can smell chemical. A self-cleaning cycle smells strong by design. Natural gas and propane have no odor on their own. Utilities add a sulfur compound so a leak smells like rotten eggs. If what you smell is more like burning plastic or hot electrical, that's a different problem, and it still means stop using the appliance and call us. When you can't tell, treat it as gas. Get out and call the utility.

The gas utility comes first. They find and stop leaks in lines, meters, and connections. That's their job, and they have the equipment for it. We come second. Once the utility says the house is safe and the leak is at the appliance, that's our lane. Can I still use my oven if the smell went away?
No. A smell that comes and goes usually means an intermittent leak, often a burner valve that isn't closing all the way. Keep the appliance off until the utility checks the home and we look at the range.
Will the gas company fix my stove?
Usually not. Utilities locate leaks and shut gas off at the meter or the appliance. Repairs to the range itself, valves, igniters, safety valves, fall to an appliance technician like us.
Why does my propane range smell worse in humid weather?
Humid, still air holds odors down near the floor instead of dispersing them, which happens a lot along the Florida coast. The smell seems stronger, but the leak is the same size it was. Handle it the same way.
