The Dishwasher Filter Most Homes Never Clean
Gritty dishes and a smell when you open the door usually trace back to a clogged filter at the bottom of the dishwasher, and pulling it out to rinse it takes about two minutes. More detergent won't fix it. Hotter water and a different rinse aid won't either. In most Florida homes we visit, that filter has never been taken out once, and that's the whole story right there.

What Happens When Nobody Touches It
The filter sits under the bottom rack and catches food bits so they don't get sprayed back onto your glasses. It fills up, then it packs down into a mat of grease, seeds, and rice. Water can't move through it, so the pump works harder and the wash gets weaker, and your dishes come out with a film on them. That smell you notice on humid mornings is old food sitting in standing water. Give it a few months and the trapped debris starts working into the drain line and the pump housing. A two-minute rinse becomes a service call. We see it all the time in houses where the dishwasher runs every night.
The Two-Minute Habit That Prevents All Of It
Pull the bottom rack out and look at the floor of the tub. There's a round cylinder down there, sometimes with a flat screen around it. Twist the cylinder counterclockwise, usually about a quarter turn, and lift it straight out. The flat screen normally lifts free after that. Rinse both under hot tap water, and use an old toothbrush with a drop of dish soap on the greasy spots. Skip the wire brush, it tears the mesh. Set the screen back flat, drop the cylinder in, twist clockwise until it seats. If it won't lock, it isn't lined up. Never run the machine with the filter out.
How Often, Honestly
If you run the dishwasher most nights, once a month is a good rhythm. Scrape your plates well and only run it a few times a week? Every two or three months is fine. Snowbird households that close a house up for the season should clean the filter before leaving and again when they get back, because standing water in a closed-up Florida house grows things you don't want. Cook a lot of rice, oatmeal, or fibrous vegetables, check it more often. Really, look at it once and how it looks will tell you your schedule.
Signs You Waited Too Long
Water standing in the bottom of the tub after a finished cycle means drainage is already restricted. Chalky or sandy grit on clean dishes means debris is getting recirculated. If a sour smell comes back a day after you clean the filter, the problem is past the filter, down in the drain hose or the sump. Grinding or buzzing during the wash cycle can mean something hard is lodged in the pump. Watch for cloudy glassware that won't wipe clean, too, and a bottom spray arm that won't spin freely when you turn it by hand. By then, cleaning the filter helps some, but it won't fix it alone.

Does my dishwasher even have a removable filter?
Most machines built in the last decade or so do. Older ones often have a hard food grinder instead. Pull the bottom rack and look at the tub floor. If there's a twist cylinder down there, it comes out.
Can I put the filter in the dishwasher to clean it?
No. Scrub it by hand under hot running water. Running the machine with the filter out lets food debris get to the pump, which is the exact damage you're trying to avoid.
Will vinegar or a cleaning tablet do the same job?
They help with odor and mineral film. They won't lift a packed mat of grease and food off the mesh, though. Scrubbing is the part that does the work. Use cleaners on top of that, not instead of it.
