What "not cleaning" actually tells us
Dishwashers don't scrub anything. They spray hot water through spinning arms and let the detergent handle the chemistry. So when dishes come out dirty, either the water never got hot enough, the spray didn't reach, or the detergent never dissolved and did its job. Look at the pattern on the dishes. Only the top rack dirty points at the upper spray arm. Gritty sand on everything points at the filter or the drain. White film on glass is hard water and a dry rinse aid reservoir. Hard-baked food still stuck on usually means the cycle was too short for what you loaded.
Cause family one: loading, detergent, and water temperature
Start here, because it costs nothing. Overloading is what we see most. A big platter laid flat blocks the spray for everything under it, bowls nested together hide half their surface, and a tall pot will stop the upper arm from turning at all. Then check your detergent. Old powder clumps and won't dissolve. Pods left sitting in a humid Florida laundry room go sticky and come out of the cup half-melted. Fill the rinse aid if it's dry. Last, run the kitchen faucet hot before you start the cycle so the machine fills with hot water instead of pulling a line full of cold first.
Cause family two: clogged filter, spray arms, and hard water buildup
Pull the bottom rack out and look at the floor of the tub. Most modern dishwashers have a cylinder filter that twists out by hand. Rinse it under the tap. You'll probably find seeds, labels, glass chips and a layer of grease. Then spin each spray arm with your finger. It should turn freely. Hold it up to the light and check the little holes. Well water and city water both leave mineral scale in there, and scale plus food debris will close those holes right off. A toothpick clears them. Wipe the door gasket and the edge under the door while you're at it, because gunk collects there and rides back onto the dishes.
Cause family three: parts that stopped working
If the tub is clean, the arms spin, and dishes still come out dirty, something mechanical or electrical is failing. Usual suspects: a worn wash pump impeller, a heating element that no longer brings the water up to temperature, a soap cup that sticks shut, an inlet valve letting in too little water, or a control board hit by a lightning surge. Our summer storms take out boards and valves more than folks expect. All of that sits behind panels, next to wiring and water. That's our work, not yours. Safe checks you can do right now, and what we do differently
Safe for you: unload and reload with space between items, twist out and rinse the filter, spin and clear the spray arms, use fresh detergent, top off the rinse aid, run hot water at the sink first, and pick a longer cycle when food is baked on. Leave the lower access panel alone and don't touch wiring. What we bring is a thermometer to read the actual fill temperature, a meter to test the heating element and inlet valve, and a way to measure fill volume and pump pressure. We also check the drain hose loop, because dirty water siphoning back into the tub will keep dishes dirty no matter how clean that filter is.

Should I rinse dishes before loading?
Scrape the bones and big chunks off, but skip the full rinse. Modern detergent needs a little food residue to work against. Leaving space so water reaches every surface matters more.
Why do my glasses come out cloudy and gritty?
That's usually mineral scale from hard water rather than dirt. Rinse aid helps a lot. If the film wipes off with vinegar, it's scale. If it doesn't, the glass is etched and it won't come back.
Is a dishwasher not cleaning worth repairing?
