Age is a starting point, not the answer
Most dishwashers give good service for a decade or so. Salt air near the coast and hard water inland can shorten that. Age alone doesn't decide anything, though. We've fixed twelve-year-old machines with one worn part, and we've sent four-year-old machines to the curb because the tub cracked. What we look at is how the rest of the machine has held up. Rusted racks, a flaking door liner, a pump that's already been replaced once, all of that adds up. A clean interior and a solid door seal on an older unit is a good sign. Age tells us how much life is left, not whether today's fault is fixable.
What broke matters more than how old it is
Some faults are routine. A clogged drain hose, a failed drain pump, a bad door latch switch, a leaking inlet valve, a heating element that quit, those are common and straightforward. Control boards fail too, often after a lightning surge, and that's a bigger job. The ones that usually end the conversation are structural: a cracked inner tub, a rusted-through sump, or water damage that reached the wiring. Those aren't repairs, they're rebuilds. When we open the diagnosis, we're sorting the fault into one of those buckets before anything else.
Can we still get the part?
This is the quiet dealbreaker. A perfectly repairable dishwasher becomes a replacement when the part is discontinued. Older builder-grade units and some discontinued lines run short on control boards and pump assemblies. We check availability before we recommend anything, because there's no point fixing a machine on paper. If a part is backordered for weeks, we say so. Sometimes a compatible substitute exists and we use it. Sometimes it doesn't, and that's honest information you can act on. Snowbird season can stretch shipping times too, and we'll tell you if that's in play.
How the visit actually goes
We run the machine, listen, and watch where the water goes. Then we test the parts in the failure path: motor, valve, float switch, controls. We're not guessing from the symptom alone, because a dishwasher that won't fill and one that won't drain can share a cause. Once we know the fault, we tell you the repair, the part situation, and our read on how much life the rest of the machine has. Then it's your call. We'd rather explain why a repair isn't smart than do it and see you again in four months for a different failure.
When replacing is the better move
Replacement wins in a few clear cases. The tub or sump is cracked and leaking onto your subfloor. Water reached the wiring harness and the corrosion is spread out. Two or three major components have already failed on a machine well past ten years. The part doesn't exist anymore. Or the repair covers most of what a comparable new unit costs, and we'll say that plainly without naming figures. We also flag when your dishwasher has been leaking quietly and there's cabinet or floor damage under it. That's a repair worth doing before the new machine goes in. Call us and describe what you're seeing.
Deciding a Dishwasher's Fate — straight answers
My dishwasher is nine years old. Automatic replace?
No. Nine years with one failed pump and a clean tub is usually worth fixing. Nine years with rust in the sump and a second control failure is not. The fault type and the machine's condition decide it.
Can a lightning surge kill a dishwasher?
Yes, and we see it in Florida. Surges commonly take out the control board while the motor and pump stay fine. Whether that's worth repairing depends on board availability for your model, which we check during the visit.
It smells bad but runs fine. Is that a repair?
Often not. Odor usually traces to a clogged filter, food in the sump, or a sagging drain hose holding standing water. Clean the filter first. If the smell stays, call us and we'll look at the drain path.
How it works
- Step 1
Tell us the noise
Describe what you see, hear, or smell. Buzzing, leaking, burning, or nothing at all. The model number helps if you can find the sticker. We'll ask a few questions and book a window that fits your day.
- Step 2
We diagnose in person
A technician comes to your kitchen or laundry room, tests the machine, and finds the part that actually failed. You'll hear what went wrong in plain words, then you decide whether repair or replacement makes better sense.
- Step 3
Repair and retest
With your approval we finish the work and run the appliance through a real cycle before we pack up. Floors get wiped and the packaging leaves with us. You also get care tips for our salt air and storms.

Why homeowners call us
- North Florida conditionsCoastal humidity rusts drain pans, and salt air chews on dryer vents near an outside wall. Lightning surges kill control boards in the middle of a storm. We see these failures constantly, so we know which part to check first instead of guessing.
- Independent shopWe aren't tied to any manufacturer. We service refrigerators, ranges, dishwashers, washers, and dryers from most major brands, and our advice comes from what your machine needs rather than a brand sales script.
- Snowbird schedulesAn empty house hides problems. An icemaker floods in March, or a fridge quits in July and nobody knows. We do season-open checks and season-close shutdowns, and we can coordinate with a neighbor or your property manager.
- Straight answersSome machines are worth fixing and some are past it. If a repair doesn't make sense for the age and condition of your unit, we'll say so out loud, and you can put that money somewhere better.
- All major brands, gas & electricIndependent service on Whirlpool, LG, Samsung, GE, Maytag, Bosch, KitchenAid and the rest.
- Straight answersIf replacing beats repairing, you hear it from us first.
