What "runs but no heat" actually tells us
A dryer tumbles and it heats, and those are two separate systems. When the drum turns but the air stays cool, the tumbling side is doing its job, so the motor, belt, and drum rollers come off the suspect list. That narrows things fast. The heat side needs a heat source, a control that switches it on, and airflow to carry that heat through the clothes. Any one of those failing looks identical from the laundry room: damp clothes, long cycle. Our job is figuring out which one broke. Airflow is the piece a homeowner can actually check.
Cause family one: airflow that got choked off
We start here because looking costs nothing. Lint builds in the vent hose and duct over years, and in North Florida humid air packs that lint down tight and damp. Add a crushed foil hose squeezed behind the machine, or a bird nest in the outside vent hood, and hot air has nowhere to go. Some dryers keep heating anyway, but the moisture can't leave, so the clothes stay wet and feel cool. Others shut the heat off on purpose to protect themselves. Go look at the outside flap. If it isn't puffing warm air during a cycle, airflow is your problem.
Cause family two: a tripped safety or blown fuse
Every dryer has heat limits built in. A thermal fuse or high-limit thermostat cuts power to the heat when temperatures climb past safe, and restricted venting is the usual reason they trip. Lightning surges and brownouts take them out too, and we see plenty of that in summer storm season. Here's the thing: most thermal fuses do not reset. Once one opens, heat is gone until the part is replaced. That's why clearing the vent by itself sometimes doesn't fix anything. The vent caused the trip, but the tripped part still needs swapping. Both get handled, or you're calling us again in a month.
Cause family three: the heat source itself
On electric dryers, a heating element sits in a housing and glows to warm the incoming air. Elements crack and break with age. On gas dryers, an igniter, the gas valve coils, or a flame sensor can fail so the gas never lights. Either way the drum keeps happily spinning. All of that lives behind panels, next to 240-volt terminals or a live gas connection, and we don't ask homeowners to go in there. On newer machines there's one more possibility: a control board or timer that never sends the heat signal. Everything downstream tests fine, the command just never arrives.
Safe checks you can do, and what we do next
Start with the setting, because Air Fluff and Air Dry don't heat. Pull the dryer out and look for a crushed or kinked vent hose. Clean the lint screen, then run water through it. If water pools on top instead of passing through, fabric softener film is blocking airflow. Walk outside and feel the vent flap mid-cycle. On electric dryers a half-blown house breaker leaves the drum turning with no heat, so flip that breaker fully off and back on. Stop there. We show up with a meter and test the element, fuse, thermostats, igniter, and control circuit in order, so the failed part gets replaced instead of guessed at. Call us and tell us what you found.

Can a dryer tumble fine but have a bad breaker?
Yes, on electric dryers. They run on two 120-volt legs. One leg feeds the motor and controls, the other feeds the heating element. If half of that double breaker fails, you get tumbling with no heat.
Will cleaning my vent fix the no-heat problem?
Sometimes. If the heat was working and just trapped, yes. But if a thermal fuse already blew from the restriction, cleaning keeps it from happening again and the fuse still has to be replaced.
Is it safe to keep running the dryer this way?
We'd stop. A blocked vent that killed your heat is also a fire risk, and running cycle after cycle on a struggling machine puts stress on other parts. Unplug it and have it looked at.
