Two Cycles for One Load

But drying time has doubled, and in Florida humidity that points at airflow.

What "two cycles" actually tells us
Heat alone does not dry clothes. The dryer moves hot air through the drum, picks up moisture, and pushes that wet air outside. If the air cannot get out, the moisture stays in the drum and rides along with the laundry. The machine keeps running and keeps heating and never finishes the job. That is why long dry times point at airflow before the heater. Here is a useful clue. Clothes that come out hot and damp mean restricted airflow, and clothes that come out cool and damp make heat the bigger suspect. Both matter, but on our service calls airflow causes far more two-cycle complaints.
Cause one: lint and a clogged vent run
Start with the cheapest and most common cause. Lint builds in the screen, in the trap housing, in the flex hose behind the dryer, and along the duct that runs out to the wall. Long runs with several elbows collect more of it. So does crushed foil hose behind a dryer shoved tight to the wall. Outside, the wall flap can jam with lint, wasp nests, or a bird nest, and salt air and coastal grit help pack that gunk down hard. A blocked run traps heat inside the cabinet too, which shortens the life of parts and raises a real fire risk. Cleaning the whole path, not just the screen, fixes a lot of these calls.
Cause two: heat that is only half working
If the vent is genuinely clear, we look at heat. Electric dryers run on two legs of power. Lose one leg to a tripped half-breaker or a weak connection and the drum still spins while the element barely warms. That is a long, useless cycle. Lightning surges are common in North Florida summers, and they love to take out heating circuits and control boards. Gas dryers can have ignition or valve trouble, which we handle ourselves. That is not homeowner territory. Failing thermostats and cycling switches also cut heat early, and those parts sit behind panels near live circuits, so testing them is our job.
Cause three: sensors and controls that quit early
Some dryers stop by sensor instead of timer. Moisture bars inside the drum read how wet the clothes are, and dryer sheet residue or fabric softener film can leave them misreading. Then the machine shuts down early and you run a second cycle. Worn drum seals and a stretched belt let hot air bypass the clothes altogether. A slipping blower wheel moves less air even with a clean duct. Control boards damaged by a surge can call for short cycles or skip heat stages. Symptoms overlap badly here, which is why guessing at parts gets expensive. Measuring tells the truth faster than swapping.
Safe checks you can do right now, and what we do next
Clean the lint screen, then hold it under running water. If water pools instead of passing through, softener film is blocking it, so scrub it with soap and a soft brush. Pull the dryer out a bit and look for a crushed hose. Then go outside and watch the vent flap while the dryer runs. You should feel strong warm air. Clear any nest or lint you can reach by hand. Do not open panels or touch gas lines. On our visit we measure airflow and temperature rise, check both power legs, test sensors and thermostats, and inspect the duct run end to end. Can a long vent run be the whole problem?
Yes. Every elbow and every extra foot adds resistance. A run that was borderline when the house was built can go over the edge once lint builds up. Sometimes rerouting or shortening the duct is the real fix.
Is it safe to keep using the dryer while it takes two cycles?
We would not. Restricted airflow traps heat in the cabinet and around lint, and that is a fire risk. Clean the screen and the vent path first. If dry times stay long, have it checked before you run more loads.
Why did this start after a thunderstorm?
Surges damage heating circuits, thermostats, and control boards. The dryer may tumble normally with little or no heat. If your trouble started the same week as a storm, tell us. That narrows the search quickly.
