What a clogged vent slowly does to your dryer
A dryer works by pushing hot, wet air outside. Block that path and the moisture stays in the drum, so clothes come out warm and still damp. The dryer then runs longer, and every extra minute is heat sitting on the thermal fuse, the heating element, and the belt. Parts that should last years start failing early. The blower struggles. On gas units, poor airflow makes the burner cycle more than it should. And lint is fuel, so add heat and a restricted duct and you have the setup for a laundry room fire. None of this happens in one week. It builds over a couple of seasons while everything seems mostly fine.
The five-minute habit that prevents most of it
Pull the lint screen every single load. Not every few loads, every one. Once a month, hold that screen under running water. If water beads up and sits on top instead of running through, dryer sheet residue has sealed the mesh. Scrub it gently with a soft brush and a drop of dish soap, then let it dry all the way. Next, go outside and look at the vent hood while the dryer runs. You should feel steady warm air pushing out. Lift the flap and pull out any lint clumps you can reach by hand. Keep the flap clear of mulch, shrubs, and dryer sock covers that trap fuzz.
How often the whole line needs cleaning
For a typical family, once a year is the baseline for cleaning the full duct run. Make it every six months if you dry more than five loads a week, have long hair or shedding pets, or your duct runs up through an attic or across a long stretch of crawlspace. Short, straight runs out a nearby wall stay cleaner longer. Elbows and flexible foil ducts collect lint fast. Coastal humidity matters too. Damp lint packs tighter than dry lint, so vents here load up quicker than they do inland. Snowbirds, clean it when you arrive, not when you leave, so nothing sits wet all summer.
Signs prevention time has passed
Clothes still damp after a full cycle is the loudest signal. A few others: the dryer top gets hot enough to be uncomfortable to touch, the room turns humid and smells scorched, or a load takes twice as long as it did last year. Go check outside. If the flap barely moves or no warm air comes out, the line is blocked. Lint showing up around the door seal or on the floor behind the machine means air is backing up. If the dryer shuts off partway through and restarts later, a thermal limit is probably tripping on heat. Stop using it and call us.
When it's the vent and when it's the dryer
Sometimes we clear a vent and the dryer runs like new. Sometimes the vent is clean and the real trouble is inside: a failed heating element, a bad thermostat, a worn blower wheel, or a control board cooked by a lightning surge, which we see plenty of during summer storms. You can tell a little from the outside. No heat at all usually points to a component. Heat but slow drying usually points to airflow. Either way, don't pull panels or touch gas connections. Can I clean the dryer vent myself?
You can clear the outside hood and vacuum the first foot or two behind the dryer. Long runs, attic ducts, and roof vents need a rotary brush and a blower to do properly. Skip anything that means removing dryer panels.
Does a shorter vent still need cleaning?
Yes, just less often. Short straight runs stay clearer, but lint still builds at the hood flap and in the transition hose behind the machine. Check the outside flap a few times a year and clean the full run yearly.
Is a foil flex duct a problem?
Thin foil accordion duct traps lint in every ridge, and it crushes easily behind the dryer. Rigid or semi-rigid metal duct moves air better and cleans out easier. Ask us to look at your setup while we're there.
