What Dirty Coils Actually Do to Your Fridge
Condenser coils dump heat out of the fridge and into your kitchen. Cover them with a blanket of lint and that heat has nowhere to go, so the compressor runs longer and longer to hit the same temperature. Longer run times mean more heat, more wear, and a fan motor pushing against clogged fins. In a humid Florida house the dust turns into a damp mat that traps even more of it. Over a year or two the compressor takes the beating. Compressor failures are the expensive kind. Coil cleaning is not, and that is the whole argument for the five-minute habit.
The Five-Minute Habit
Unplug the refrigerator first. Then find the coils. On most older units they sit behind a snap-off grille at the bottom front or across the back. Many newer models put them underneath, reachable from the front kick plate that pops off by hand. If a panel needs a screwdriver or hides wiring, stop and leave it to us. Use a vacuum crevice tool and a long flexible coil brush from the hardware store. Work gently, one direction, and pull the dust out instead of pushing it deeper. Wipe the floor underneath. Snap the grille back on, plug it in, and you're done. No chemicals, no water, and don't bend the fins.
How Often, and When It Matters Most
Twice a year covers most homes. Go every three months if you have shedding dogs or cats, a busy household, or the fridge lives in a garage or Florida room where salt air and yard dust drift in. Pick easy anchors so you remember. Once when the heat sets in around May, once when the weather finally breaks in the fall. Snowbirds, do it right after you arrive and again before you close the house up. When a unit sits idle for months the dust settles thick, and the first hard run-cycle of the season is when weak parts give out.
Signs It Is Already Past Prevention
Watch for a fridge that never seems to shut off, or one that clicks on and off in short bursts. Warm milk while the freezer still makes ice points at the sealed system or the condenser fan. Frost building on the back wall of the freezer, water pooling under the crisper drawers, or a burning-dust smell that does not fade after cleaning all need a technician. So does a loud rattle or hum from the bottom rear. Cleaning coils will not fix a failing fan motor, a leaking sealed system, or a defrost problem. If the symptoms stay after a good cleaning, call us.
A Few Habits That Help Just as Much
Give the fridge breathing room. A couple of inches at the back and sides lets hot air escape instead of recirculating. Keep the top clear of cereal boxes and baskets. Check the door gaskets by closing a thin strip of paper in the door. If it slides out with no drag, the seal is tired and warm humid air is leaking in all day long. Vacuum the floor vent area if your fridge sits near one. After a lightning storm knocks the power out, listen for the compressor to restart within a few minutes. If it stays silent, unplug it and reach us.
