How the Seasons Wear on Home Appliances

The fridge hums all night and the washer smells like a pond. Heat, humidity, salt air, and summer lightning each break machines in their own way. Here's the season-by-season rundown, plus what you can safely check yourself.

Spring: humidity wakes up, and so do the smells
Once the dew point climbs, moisture stops leaving your house on its own. Front-load washers go sour because the door gasket never gets a chance to dry. Dishwashers hold standing water longer than they should. An ice maker in a warm garage fridge works harder and freezes up. Safe checks: wipe the washer gasket, leave the door cracked between loads. Pull the bottom dish rack and clear food bits out of the dishwasher filter basket, then run a hot empty cycle in both machines. If the washer still smells after all that, the drain hose or pump housing is probably holding water, and that one's ours. Call us. Taxes aside, spring is the cheapest time to catch this.
Summer: heat plus lightning is the worst combo
Afternoon storms bring surges, and the next morning the phone rings about control boards that went dark on ranges, dishwashers, and refrigerators. Heat is the other half of it. A fridge fighting a 90-degree kitchen or a hot garage runs nearly nonstop, and dusty condenser coils turn that into warm milk and soft ice cream. Dryers in laundry rooms with no air movement overheat and quit mid-cycle. Safe checks: vacuum the fridge coils behind the toe grille or on the back. Give the unit a few inches of breathing room. Put plug-in surge protection on anything with a digital display, and unplug the small countertop stuff when a heavy storm rolls through.
Fall: salt air keeps working after the storms stop
Near the coast or the St. Johns, salt rides the breeze inland. It settles on metal and eats it slowly. We find rusted washer feet, corroded dryer vent clamps, pitted screws on outdoor kitchen appliances and garage freezers. Wind-driven rain during storm season pushes moisture into vent hoods and outdoor outlets. Safe checks: go look at the dryer vent flap outside. It should open when the dryer runs and close when it stops. Clear out lint, wasp nests, and mud daubers. Wipe salt film off stainless with plain water and dry it. Then check under the water heater and washer for fresh rust streaks.
Winter and snowbird season: cold snaps and empty houses
A few nights near freezing do real damage here, because our plumbing runs through unheated garages and outside walls. Frozen supply lines to a washer or ice maker crack, then leak once they thaw. Garage refrigerators get confused when the room drops below their design range and stop making ice. A house closed up for months ends up with dry drain traps, stiff pump seals, and stale water sitting in the ice maker. Safe checks: shut off the washer supply valves if you're leaving for weeks, and empty the ice bin. When you get back, run the dishwasher and washer empty before you load them, and keep an eye on the hoses for drips.
A short pre-season routine that saves calls
Twice a year is plenty. Pick spring and fall. Pull the fridge out and vacuum the coils. Clean the dishwasher filter and look the door seal over for cracks. Empty the dryer lint screen every load, and have the full vent run cleared once a year, since a long or crushed duct is the real fire risk. Look behind the washer for hoses that bulge or weep. Feel for warm spots, and listen for new noises: a grinding pump, a squealing drum, a fridge fan that clicks. Small sounds come first. Does my garage refrigerator really need a different setup?
Garages here swing from 40 to 110 degrees. Most standard fridges aren't built for that range, so they short-cycle or quit making ice. Keep it out of direct sun, leave clearance around it, and clean the coils often.
Should I unplug appliances during a thunderstorm?
Unplug whatever's easy, like the microwave and coffee maker. For the big machines, use good surge protection instead of yanking cords. A whole-home surge device installed by an electrician helps with lightning damage to control boards.
Why does my washer smell worse in summer?
Warm, damp air lets residue and biofilm grow fast in the gasket and the drain path. Use the right amount of detergent, run a hot cleaning cycle monthly, and leave the door open so the drum dries out.
